What Are School Admission Scams?

The infamous college admission scandal 2019 (or Operation Varsity Blues) refers to a conspiracy revolving around coaches, schemers, and parents who use unfair means to control undergraduate college admissions.

This controversy shed light on the educational industry’s best-kept secret—a backdoor to enter Ivy League Schools and private institutes. The fraudulent crime involves someone from the institute who willingly inflates test scores, forges recommendation letters, and bribes coaches to ensure that applicants get accepted into their dream school.

In these cases, parents (or students themselves) willingly pay their way in to get admitted.

However, things can take a devastating turn if this alleged representative pretended to be an influential admission committee member. There are real-life stories where con artists have taken bribes from parents and guardians without keeping their side of the bargain.

Purpose and Intent

School admission scams are divided into two categories. Scammers are willing to extort money from eager parents without fulfilling their promise.

Alternatively, there are cases where both parents and influential players within the education system are co-conspirers. These people cheat their way in to secure spots for applicants from wealthy backgrounds. The second scenario prevents well-deserving students from achieving their academic goals.
